6th Sunday of the Year

Fr. Michael writes :- The Gospel today tells how Jesus cured a leper by touching him. We have no lepers among us, so one might ask:- “What is the relevance of this for us?” The importance of the Gospel is that the worst suffering of the leper was caused, not by leprosy itself, but by the consequences of it – being rejected by people. The relevance for us lies there – in the people we reject, who we treat like ‘lepers’.
The ‘leper’ is anyone I exclude or cut off, anyone I look down on or
despise. That person may even be living under my roof. We can reject in small but subtle ways. It may be in indifference; the tone of my voice or a look.
The medical world tells us it costs about £ 1.00 to cure a person of leprosy today. What does it take to cure a person of rejection? A little dose of the oldest drug of all – love. All of us have the capacity to love.

Retiring Collection – Catholic Education Service

This weekend at all Masses we have a retiring collection for the Catholic Education Service at all Masses. We are also asked to pray for those involved in Catholic education.

Last Thursday Cardinal Cormac Murphy O’Connor published the white paper “Communion and Mission”, which focuses on the pastoral priorities for our Diocese in the next few years. These include prayer and liturgy, formation of lay people in faith and life, building of community, vocation and development of our parishes. A short pamphlet, a summary of the full document is available for all parishioners this weekend and you can collect your copy from the back of the Church.

Next weekend a reflection booklet for the Lenten period will be available. This will help everyone in the parish to reflect on the five priorities of our Diocese. These booklets will also be used by the Lenten House Groups who will be meeting in small groups during the season of Lent.

Pilgrimage to Italy : 15th – 21st October 2006

I have organised a parish pilgrimage for 15th – 21st October 2006. This pilgrimage is to Padua, Venice, Verona and Lake Garda. Flights are from Heathrow to Venice and we will stay at Casa de Pellegrino Hotel, in the heart of Padua. Padua is associated with the Franciscan St. Anthony who died there in the 13th Century. We visit Venice, the City of St. Mark; Verona famous for being the city of Romeo and Juliet, but also St. Zeno, a fifth century Bishop whose relics are contained in a Romanesque Church noted as being one of the finest in Europe. We will visit the Venetian Islands and to San Francesco del Deserto where in 1220 St. Frances founded a Sanctuary. Lastly, Lake Garda and the town of Limone, the birth place of St. Daniel Comboni, Missionary and canonized in 2003. Cost is £ 659.00 per person for twin bedded room includes flights, entrance fees and half board. We shall be accompanied on this trip by Judith Dean who was our Tour Escort in Assisi last October. There are 8 places left now for this trip. Please see Fr. Michael ASAP. WOULD THOSE WHO ATTENDED THE MEETING AND WISH TO GO PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SENT YOUR FORM AND DEPOSIT TO PAX TRAVEL.

God our loving Father,
who made us your children
in baptism, pour out on us afresh the gifts of your
Holy Spirit.

Open our ears to
hear your Word,
open our hearts to
you in prayer,
that we may receive
with ever deeper faith the
Bread of Life.

Strengthened through
these gifts
make us signs of
your presence
to the world of today.

Father, hear our
humble prayer
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen
