Fr. Mark writes:-It
is difficult to know what history will judge to have been Pope
John Paul II’s greatest achievement. One of these was
certainly The Catechism of the Catholic Church. For the first
time in 400 years a complete account of our faith and the Church’s
teaching was set out for all. Drawing all the time on Scripture
and Tradition, it is an impressive document At nearly 700 pages,
however, it is not a light bedtime read!
Pope John Paul recognised this and asked the now Pope Benedict
to produce a summary. This appeared in English just before Easter.
The Compendium contains in manageable form and question and
answer format all we believe as Catholics. It is beautifully
produced and illustrated and is available in hardback at just
£6.95. It is a wonderful resource whenever we want to
know the reason for our belief, when others ask us questions.
It is a book we should all consider buying – for ourselves,
as a present for others. Copies are available in the Repository;
we can order more if needed.
Mass Intentions
Unless stated explicitly you would
like your Mass Intention said in the Sacred Heart Church,
it may be passed on to the Divine Word Missionaries
who celebrate Masses in their chapel daily and are always
grateful to receive intentions. Since January we have
received 236 Mass Intentions and only 13 are able to
be said in the Church each week.
Congratulations
This Sunday we welcome into the Church through the
sacrament of Baptism : Alfie Curtis, Adam Herne, Alice
Kerin, Sofia Parenti and Harry Wootton.
WEEF
The Westminster Ecclesiastical Education Fund pays
for the training of our future priests. There has been
a significant increase in the number of men entering
seminary in the last two years, but we need to pay for
the cost of their training over six years and the upkeep
of the seminary. After the Masses next weekend there
will be a retiring collection for WEEF. Please give
generously.
Confirmation
There will be a rehearsal for Confirmation at 7.30
pm on Tuesday, 9 May. All candidates, parents and (if
local) sponsors should attend.
Confirmation itself is at the 11.30 am Mass on Sunday,
14 May. If that is the Mass you usually attend, you
may wish to consider going to another Mass that Sunday
as most seats will be reserved for the Confirmation
candidates and their families.
Baptism Preparation
The next baptism preparation session for parents wishing
to have their children baptised will be held in the
house at 8.00 p.m. on Wednesday, 3 May. Please let us
know if you plan to attend that session.
Bank Holiday Monday
Tomorrow is a Bank Holiday. The church will be closed
after the 10 am Mass.
Fr. Michael’s 25th
Anniversary
On 23rd May I shall be celebrating my 25th anniversary
as a priest. There will be a Mass of Thanksgiving here
in the Church on Friday 19th May 2006 at 7.30 pm. This
will be followed by a Reception in the Hall and Coffee
Lounge. For this occasion of both thanksgiving and joy,
I would very much like if as many parishioners as possible
would come along and join me in this celebration of
priesthood.
God our loving Father,
who made us your children
in baptism, pour out on us afresh the gifts of your
Holy Spirit.
Open our ears to
hear your Word,
open our hearts to
you in prayer,
that we may receive
with ever deeper faith the
Bread of Life.
Strengthened through
these gifts
make us signs of
your presence
to the world of today.
Father, hear our
humble prayer
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen
