5th Sunday of Easter

Fr. Mark writes:-Christianity overturns the values of the world and the expectations of men. That is the message of the first reading. Sometimes it is so easy for us to judge, to assume we know what God wants. But God is much bigger than our mindset, and we have to be willing to readjust.
The disciples have been observant Jews – they think they know what God expects in religion, that they are the Chosen People.
They have got to re-think. Peter assures them God has no favourites; He is no respecter of nationality or any other purely human distinction. The Good News is for pagan and Jew alike. The only requirements are an acceptance of Jesus as key to our salvation and an openness to receive the Holy Spirit. Let us ensure we do not put up any obstacles where God has placed none.

Welcome

We welcome Fr. Derek McGuire of the Augustinians who will celebrate the 10.00 am and 11.30 am Masses for us this morning while Fr. Mark is on pilgrimage with parishioners in France.

Confirmation

Thank-you to the Bishop, the musicians and altar servers – and especially to the candidates themselves – who helped make last Sunday such a beautiful celebration of the sacrament. There was a great deal of positive feedback subsequently. Thank-you also to all the catechists who have given their time so generously over the last few months to help pass on our faith to our young people. It is very much appreciated.

Evening Masses

There will be no evening Mass on Tuesday this week.

Ascension Day

This Thursday, 25 May, is the Feast of the Ascension of Our Lord, a holy day of obligation when all Catholics should try to be at Mass. There will be a Vigil Mass at 8.00 pm on the Wednesday and Masses at 10.00 am and 8.00 pm on the Thursday. We look forward to welcoming the top half of Sacred Heart School to the 10.00 am Mass on Ascension Day.

World Communication Day

There will be a retiring collection at the Masses next weekend on behalf of Catholic Communications to help ensure that the Gospel is heard in today’s society.

in baptism, pour out on us afresh the gifts of your
Holy Spirit.

Open our ears to
hear your Word,
open our hearts to
you in prayer,
that we may receive
with ever deeper faith the
Bread of Life.

Strengthened through
these gifts
make us signs of
your presence
to the world of today.

Father, hear our
humble prayer
through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen
