Happy Holidays
It may be that over the next few weeks you are going on holiday to different destinations all over the world. I wish you well in your travels. Meanwhile just to remind you that we have to run the parish even when people are away just as you do your own homes. It would help greatly if before you go or on your return you could make up your contributions. In this way we will be able to budget and pay our bills throughout the holiday season.
Mary Holmes, R.I.P.
The family would like to express their very great gratitude for all the prayers and support which Mary and the family received during her illness. We are also very grateful for all the letters, cards and Mass cards which have been received.
Before she died, Mary made arrangements for three Masses to be offered for the priests and people of the parish – both past and present – and these will be said in due course.

In today’s Gospel we see how the people had followed Jesus to a lonely place. So anxious were they to hear what he had to say that they had forgotten to bring food with them – except one little boy. So naturally they got hungry. And what did Jesus do? He gave them the only thing that mattered to them at that moment. He gave them food and plenty of it. Our problem in the developed world is not that we have too little food but too much. So the main preoccupation of many people has become how to cut down on food. We also waste so much food today,
despite the fact that we live in a world in which at least a third of the people are hungry. In describing the things in which his followers would be judged, Christ put at the top of the list:- “I was hungry and you did or did not feed me.” We cannot multiply food as Christ did. But we can learn to share it or give the money to buy. Christ continues to ask us the question he asked Philip:- “Where can we buy bread for these people to eat.”
Welcome
Last Wednesday we bade farewell to Fr. Eduardo and welcome Fr. Carlos Cerezuela Garcia who also comes from Madrid. He will stay with us in the parish until the beginning of September.
Congratulations
Congratulations to all those who are being baptized today:- Noah Daniels; Sienna Cope; Callum Price; Lila Hayden; Alex Antiri; Ruby and Lulu Da Costa.
Sunday Classes Registration for the new year will take place on Sunday 10th September from 9.15 am to 10.00 am. All children commencing should be registered. Classes will begin on Sunday 17th September. All children from Reception up should attend. Last year the average number attending was 80 children per week. To make life a little easier for the catechists we could really do with two more helpers. If you can help from 9.15 am to 9.50 am on Sunday mornings please see me for details. In this regard you may also wish to note that as from September the Sacred Heart School will be able to accept an extra 30 children each year. Eventually this should make our Sunday School redundant. Applications should be made direct to Sacred Heart School for application forms and further information.
Refurbishment of the Warrender Room During the month of August the Warrender Room is to be refurbished. This will involve a new ceiling; rewiring and lighting etc. If you have anything in the cupboards of the Warrender Room please remove them as those cupboards are to be demolished and anything left in the room will be put into a skip.

Catechists - Preparing for your Confirmation Programme 2006 - 2007
There will be a day for catechists – new and experienced alike – on Saturday 16th Sept. from 11 am – 4pm at St. George’s Parish in Sudbury. A day to learn about what the Church tells us should be included in our programmes and to share with other Confirmation catechists. Those considering whether or not they might want to help with Confirmation preparation are welcome to attend. Bring ideas and be ready to talk about what has worked for you; and, bring a packed lunch. Contact Maria Leondiou on 020 8202 3611 or email marialeondiou@rcdow.org.uk

Statement from the President of the Bishops’ Conference
Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor
For some time the Bishops have been considering the celebration of Holy Days of Obligation in England and Wales.
In order to foster the celebration of the rhythm of the liturgical year and to celebrate more profoundly the mysteries of the life and mission of the Lord, the Bishops have decided to transfer to Sunday those Holy Days of Obligation which are Solemnities of the Lord (other than Christmas Day). This means that the Epiphany, the Ascension of the Lord and Corpus Christi will now be celebrated on Sunday.
The current practice is retained with regard to other Holy Days of Obligation. In other words, Christmas Day, the Apostles Peter and Paul, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and All Saints will continue to be celebrated as at present. With the exception of Christmas Day, the discipline in England and Wales is that when these days fall on a Saturday or Monday they are transferred to Sunday. The Bishops call on all Catholics to observe their celebration.
