Fr. Michael writes: What a hold possessions have on the human heart! How easily they can become our God. How they can take over our lives, absorbing our time, energy and attention, so that we become enslaved to them. The young man in the Gospel could not give them up. So he went away sad. Why was he sad? Because the vision Jesus had offered him had stirred something in his generous heart. However the price was too high. So instead of joy he opted for sadness. So he returns to his old life, his old comforts and
securities. It is interesting that Christ let him go. He did not run after him and offer to fix it for him. If we came to Christ, and if we let him look into our hearts and into our lives, and if we were to ask him what we must do in order to be his true followers, what would he say?
