30th Sunday of the Year

Fr. Michael writes: T he Gospel story today is familiar to us, of the Pharisee and the tax collector.  The Pharisee is completely wrapped up in himself, in his own self-righteousness, in his ability to do everything for himself.  By contrast, the tax collector, although despised by society, is aware of his need of God.  Jesus tells us who goes home at rights with God.  It is easy for us to become like the Pharisee – wrapped up in ourselves; not listening to what God wants of us.  We should try rather to imitate the
humility of the tax collector who admits his need of God in those words:-   “God be merciful to me a sinner.

Christmas Bazaar – Saturday 1st December 10.30 am – 2.30 pm

This weekend there will be a clipboard in the church foyer for any parishioner wishing to have an estate agents board outside their home to advertise for the parish bazaar.  Raffle tickets will also go on sale before and after mass this weekend.  We are currently looking for donations for our bazaar, if you have any unwanted gifts, books, toys, CDs, DVD's, fancy goods, bric-a-brac, jewellery and groceries (please ensure not date expired).  All items should be in a saleable condition (not broken or dirty and items that you would be happy to buy yourself).  There will be bins in the foyer for you to place donations.  From Friday 2 November we will be looking for volunteers to help sort every Friday from 1.30pm - if you can help please just turn up.  Many thanks.

November Dead Envelopes

November Dead envelopes are available at the back of the Church.  You may place into them your list of Dead and Offerings for Masses.  During the month of November when the Church prays especially for Holy Souls we will offer Masses for the Holy Souls and place those lists by the altar.  Envelopes should be returned to the presbytery by the end of October.

Sick and Retired Priests need your help

There are already 90 retired priests in the diocese and 70 more are due to retire over the next ten years.  These priests have given their lives to the church and it is important that we pray for them as they grow older.  But it is also important that we ensure that they receive the care that they require when they require it and there will be a special collection for the Sick & Retired Priests’ Fund next weekend.  Please take a donation envelope and give as much as you can next weekend.

Feast of All Saints

Next Thursday is the Feast of All Saints and is a Holyday of Obligation.  Masses will be as follows:-  Wednesday (Vigil Mass) – 8.00 pm; Thursday 1st November – 10.00 am & 8.00 pm.
Friday - Feast of Holy Souls – 10.00 am.

Message from His Eminence Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O’Connor

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ.  This weekend we mark the 40th anniversary of the Abortion Act.  Together with the Archbishop of Edinburgh, Cardinal Keith O’Brien, I have written an open letter to the people of this country.  Whilst stating the Catholic Church’s opposition to abortion we plead for a change of heart and mind so that women who find themselves with a pregnancy which they do not want can obtain the counselling and practical assistance that they need in order to bring their child to birth.  I have asked your parish priest to reproduce the letter and I urge you to read it carefully.  Please give witness to the sanctity of human life from conception to its natural end in any way that is possible for you.  It is of crucial importance.

Readers Training Courses

Two evenings have been organized for Readers on Tuesday 6th November 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm and Tuesday 13th November 7.30 pm – 9.00 pm.  Both evenings will take place in the Church.  I have invited Miss Letitia Nicoll LGSM, Dip CE, FESB, a teacher and adjudicator in vocal communication and public speaking, to take these evenings.  Many of our readers cannot be heard or are not using the microphone correctly.  The Liturgy of the Word is God’s Word speaking to us and it is important that it is read properly and heard by all.  All readers should come to both evenings.  New Readers and all those attending this course will then be commissioned or re-commissioned on Bible Sunday which is on 9th December.

Mass Intentions

We are unable to place any more Mass Intentions for the rest of the year.  Provision has to be made during November for some Masses to be offered for our “November Dead List”.  Any intentions that come in will be forwarded to the Divine Word Missionaries who celebrate Masses in their Chapel daily and are always grateful to receive intentions.
If you wish to have your Mass intention said in the Sacred Heart Church, please state explicitly on your mass envelope and it will be placed early in 2008.

Agustin briefly explaining your reasons for wishing to be confirmed.  Your letter should include your name, address, telephone number, date of birth, where you attend school, which Mass you normally attend and a passport size photograph.  All letters of application should be received in the presbytery by 20th December 2007 at the latest.  Please mark the outside of the envelope:  Confirmation 2008.
