Fr. Michael writes: Today is Laetare Sunday – the word simply means ‘Rejoice!’ Even in the middle of Lent, the Church reminds us that our faith is characterised by joy. The readings today talk of light and darkness. In Christ there is no trace of darkness. He is always in the light, and his light shows up the darkness in us. His truth shows up our lies. His integrity shows up our falseness. His generosity shows up our selfishness. His peace shows up our conflicts. His openness to others shows how closed we are. Therefore we should not be
surprised if we sometimes seem uncomfortable in his presence. We do not always follow his light. We follow other lights – mere flames in the night – candles in the wind. When these lights go out the darkness is even greater. “Lead kindly light, amid the encircling gloom, lead Thou me on.”
Mother’s Day
Today is Mother’s Day. Happy Mother’s Day to all mothers young and old in our parish. Let us not forget to pray today for all our mothers living and dead, particularly mothers who will be alone today. We thank God also for the gift of motherhood.
