Parish Priest: Fr. Duncan M Adamson
Parish Administrator: Nicola Burke
Fr. Duncan writes:This Sunday, our First Communion Children will be celebrating the gift of God’s word. At the 10.00am Mass I will present each child with a copy of God Speaks to His Children, texts from the bible. These books come from Aid to the Church in Need, a charity that works to bring the Word of God to the many peoples in our world deprived of the word of God. For each copy of this book we buy here in England, three copies are able to be distributed to those in need; on the missions, in countries where bibles are difficult to get, etc. Please keep our ‘special children’, their parents and their catechists in your prayers.
Tuesday this week, 2nd February, is the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, Candlemas. We celebrate that day when the parents of Jesus took him to the temple to present and dedicate him to God, as was the custom among the Jews. Among the temple faithful, Jesus’ appearance is the fulfilment of their hopes and he is perceived as the ‘light of the peoples’. We will begin our Mass in the porch where candles will be blessed, and then process into the church to continue our Mass. You may take your candles home with you, if you wish. ____________________________________________________________________________
Education Sunday
This Sunday is Education Sunday, a day on which we give thanks for the work of those engaged in Education in the Church. The work of our Catholic Schools, especially our Parish School, will immediately come to mind today. We think of the teachers in our Catholic Schools, all the support staff and the Governors. It is also important to remember the enormous involvement of people in adult education and catechesis for children in parishes. We give thanks to God for catechists who work in our parish preparing the children for the Sacraments of Holy Communion, Reconciliation and Confirmation. There will be a retiring collection today for the Catholic Education Service. The Catholic Education Service is an agency of the Bishops Conference who provide the Catholic voice for education in national and local government. Mission Appeal Next weekend we welcome Sr. Rose who will be making the Annual Mission Appeal this year in Aid of Missionary Sisters of England and Wales. Baptism Congratulations
Congratulations to Joseph Burke, Niamh Carlin and SummerLiggett who were all baptised into our Church yesterday, Saturday.
Deepest Sympathy
Our sympathy and prayers to the family of Wladek Lapot whose Funeral Mass takes place this Friday 5th February at 10.00am. The Sacrament of Confirmation Bishop Alan Hopes will be coming to our parish to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirmation on 3rd July this year. If there are any young people from our parish, in Year 9 or above, who wish to be confirmed this year, they should write to Fr. Duncan now. Their letter should include name, address, telephone number, date of birth, school attended and reason for wishing to receive this Sacrament. The application list closes today, Sunday 31st January. The young people themselves should be thinking about this Sacrament, and so they should
write the letter themselves.
The Blessing of Throats
This Wed 3rd February is the Feast of St Blaise. This feast is not celebrated in our diocese as we celebrate the Feast of SS Lawrence, Dunstan and Theodore. Traditionally on the Feast of St Blaise there is the blessing of throats, invoking the intercession of St Blaise to help us in our sickness, especially those afflicted with illnesses of the throat. If you would like to receive the blessing of throats it will be given at the end of Mass. First Friday Lunch
The next lunch will be this Friday 5th February. Why not come along and enjoy a home-cooked meal in the Coffee Lounge with friends, £4.00 per person with proceeds going to charities of our Church’s Trust.
