First Sunday of Lent

Fr. Duncan writes:Dear Parishioners, What a wonderful start to the Lenten Season this year. It was very encouraging to see the great numbers of people at our Masses on Ash Wednesday and during the last few days. Let us try and keep this up throughout this Lent.
Lent is a forty-day journey. We travel with Christ to Jerusalem to be with him in his suffering and death in order to be with him also in his resurrection and glory.
During our journey we take on different Lenten exercises to help us. Yes, we choose to give up something, to fast, but what else can we take on as an extra spiritual exercise, something positive this Lent.
Each day we have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 10.30am-12 noon. Also during Lent, we will be having Stations of the Cross each Friday at 7.30pm followed by Mass. ________________________________________________________________________

Knights of St Columba Appeal
The Knights of St. Columba will be present at every Mass this weekend, especially eager to speak to all the gentlemen who would like to know more about how to join them in their good works. Fr. Duncan encourages you to do so - many hands make light work!

Baptism Congratulations
Congratulations to Jarlath Walsh and Arielle Grant who were baptised into our Church yesterday, Saturday.

CAFOD – Lent Fast Day – Friday 26th February 2010
Lent 2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the first Family Fast Day in 1960. This year Lent Fast Day is on Friday 26th February and we are asking Catholics to raise money under the theme of ‘give it up’. We’re asking you to donate the money you save by giving something up this Friday and giving the money to CAFOD. There will be a retiring collection next weekend and envelopes are available at the back of the church.

Lenten Alms – St. John Southwort
The box for your Lenten Alms donations is near the 2nd Station. Lenten Alms is money we wish to donate to help those less well off than ourselves. This year the Archbishop has asked for monies raised to go to the St John Southworth Fund and the Thai Children's Trust.

Pilgrimage to Lourdes
Would you like to come on pilgrimage to Lourdes with us this year? The brochure for this year’s pilgrimage arrived the other day and I have put a copy on the notice board in the porch, with the details of the hotels and prices. We shall be joining with the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes in July (25th to 31st). We will have another meeting to finalise details on Tuesday 2nd March at 7.30pm. In the meantime, please think about the pilgrimage, talk about the pilgrimage and pray about the pilgrimage. For more information, have a word with Fr Duncan.

Rite of Election
This Sunday at Westminster Cathedral the Rite of Election takes place. At this celebration our Archbishop formally welcomes those people who are to be baptised and received into the Catholic Church at Easter. Please pray for Martin Poyser, Amanda Corkery, Joanne Fialho, Rita Doherty, Jessica Vaughan, Valerie Brewster and Michele Tyrrell from our parish who are preparing to be received into the Church at the Easter Vigil this year.
Quiz Night
The Jubilee Trust will be hosting a Quiz Night this Friday 26th February at 8.00pm. £5 per person on the night, bring your own food/refreshments. Eight people per table. Please contact Martyn  for further details and to confirm attendance.

Foodbank

We have received a letter from Hillingdon Foodbank expressing their thanks for our donation of 129kg of food over the Christmas period – “We are grateful to everyone who gave or participated in some way. By doing this, you have reached out to someone in need, in Hillingdon, who would otherwise go without food during the festive season." We are hoping to make a further collection for Hillingdon Foodbank during Lent and are looking for volunteers able to make a couple of trips to transport the donated food to Uxbridge during Lent. Please contact Nicola in the parish office if you are available to help between Monday to Friday during the working day.

Take to Heart these Words – Scripture Readings of Lent & Holy Week
Fr. John Deehan will be giving talks on the scripture readings of Lent and Holy Week during Lent in Hesdin Hall. The dates are Wednesday 24th February, Wednesday 10th March and Wednesday 24th March. Full details are on the poster in the porch.

The International World Day of Prayer
This will be hosted by Most Sacred Heart Church this year and will take place on Fri 5th March 2010 starting at 2.00pm. It has been prepared by the Christian women of Cameroon and Sister Janet Fearns from Mill Hill Missionaries who has spent many years working in Africa will be the guest speaker. Everyone is most welcome. The service should last about an hour, after which refreshments will be provided in Hesdin Hall. Help to provide and serve refreshments would be greatly appreciated. Lists can be found at the back of the church for those who can volunteer their services.
